How to change a clutch?

The transmission mechanism that ensures the transmission of torque from the car engine to its wheels through the gearbox is called a clutch. The importance of this mechanism is hard to overestimate, so keeping it in working order is the most important task. With careful use of the car, clutch replacement will not be needed for a long time. But still do not let the process go on its own. The motorist must know how to change the clutch and when it is time to do it. Unfortunately, sometimes people get into such accidents that even replacing the clutch does not solve the problem. If it’s more profitable to scrap your car than to repair it, then come here:

How long can the clutch last

Although in the literature there are mileage figures, after which it is necessary to change the clutch, in fact – these are average figures. Most experts agree that the clutch should be checked approximately every 80,000 – 100,000 km, and more frequently, if possible.

Much depends on the make of the car and the conditions in which it is exploited. The manner of driving, the initial quality of the unit, timely preventive maintenance and service play an important role. In addition, if the car is operated in difficult conditions, if contamination (especially small solid pieces of rock or liquids) gets inside the mechanism, it can disable even a quality unit.

When it’s time to change the clutch

That this assembly needs more attention can be understood by characteristic signs. They include:

A strong noise that occurs when the clutch pedal is depressed. This may indicate that the release bearing has failed.
The appearance of a noticeable smell of burning while driving. This indicates that there is slippage of the clutch discs, which causes the friction linings to burn.
A jerking sensation that occurs when shifting gears. It indicates a failure of damping springs.
Heavy acceleration of the car.
Increased vibrations while driving.

But the first thing that the owner of a car will notice is the discs slipping on high gears. That is, the speed of the car will not change even with an increase in the number of revolutions.

What you need to replace the clutch

To carry out the work, you need a set of socket and open-jaw wrenches. If you only need to tighten the loosened fasteners, this will be enough. You should also take care of clutch protection. To do this, you will need covers that will cover the ball bearing anvils. You will also need traverses and bushings.

The work is performed in this order:

The dismantling of the gearbox is carried out. On different types of cars, this process may have its own nuances. Therefore, it is necessary to read the instructions beforehand.
After removing all the fasteners from the basket, remove the clutch elements from the flywheel. Its surface is pre-cleaned from oil, otherwise you will also have to change the oil seal. The new disc will need to be inserted into the basket, which is attached to the flywheel with bolts.
The gearbox is installed. Be sure to check the operation of the gearbox later on. If the volume of the engine is large, a winch must be used to install the appropriate nodes.
Adjustment of the clutch is carried out. The stroke of the pedal is adjusted. It must be free.
Despite the apparent simplicity, clutch replacement is a rather complicated procedure, and it is better to entrust it to professionals, because it is expensive to correct errors after incorrectly made repairs.
